This woman contracted HIVE during her first sexual encounter at the age on nineteen. I had the privilege of knowing her when she was the age of thirty-three which for her was the end of her life due to the disease processes. I spent a good deal of time with her In clinical practice and came to a full understanding and appreciation of her life story but not at first. Aristotle and Virtue Essay Aristotle believes that we need virtue, both of thought and of character, to achieve that completeness leading to happiness. This is the function: activity in the soul in accord with virtue, where soul is defined as what is in us that carries out our characteristic activity. Aristotle is right in believing we need virtue. The end of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics Book I introduces the idea that since happiness is â€Å"a certain sort of activity of the soul in accord with complete virtue, we must examine virtue,† because doing so will allow us to closer analyze and understand how to study happiness. He goes on to identify two areas: virtues of thought and virtues of character. I believe the philosopher is right when he thinks that a good life requires harnessing both kinds of virtues. Virtues of thought are simpler to identify, as they include excellence in problem solving skills, abstract and rational thought, mathematics and the like. Virtues of character, which are also called ‘moral virtues’, seem to be more complex and are also an integral part of the completeness that Aristotle said was necessary for a good life. (p25) All the boys thought that this island would be the same magical desert islands in all those book But Golding knew that a group of English boys would never act that way and that it would not always be a paradise and that at some point something would go wrong at which everything would go wrong. Golding chooses an island as a setting because it is a microcosm, a world of its own with no way to get to other people or contact them so that Golding could really get his point across to the reader that when a group of normal school boys with no contact with the outside world slowly deteriorate into mayhem. Another reason Golding choose an island because it was a paradise, it was the complete opposite to hell, golden beaches, palm trees, plenty of wild boar to eat, A glorious sea to swim in , etc. but is this paradise such a paradise. Even in the first chapter Golding shows signs of hell. On page 1 there is a quote saying All around the long scar smashed into the jungle (p1) in this quote Golding uses personification by saying that the plane made a scar in the island when an island can not get a scar. Also in this quote Golding creates a dramatic scene of destruction of where the plane crashed into the island. This quote gives you a forewarning of the hell and destruction of what is to come later on in the book. At first the boys react very well to being on the island. Arent there any grown ups at all? I dont think so The fair boy said this solemnly; but then the delight of a realized ambition overcame him. In the middle of the scar he stood on his head and grinned at the reversed fat boy. No grown-ups! This shows us that quote shows us that he is overjoyed about being on this paradise island with no grown-ups they have the ability to do what ever they want. Even in the first chapter there are many signs that all is not well, on page sixteen there are some of the first signs of conflict. Youre talking too much, said jack Merridew. Shut up Fatty. The very fat boy (p1). And then he looked up through thick spectacles. (p2). He was shorter than the fair boy (p1). We do not find out Piggys real name because Golding is trying to show us that this person could be anyone of us or not just one person it could be a certain group of people, whether its a religious group, a group of people from a certain race. He represents all the people in the world that have been discriminated for some reason because of their race, religion, where they are from, etc. Golding wants to show us that if we do not stop killing people without a good reason soon we will destroy our world just like at the end of the novel where the whole island burns down to ashes. Jack Merridew loves being on the island except that he thinks he should be chief because he was head of choir. I ought to be chief, said Jack with simple arrogance, because Im chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp. (p17) But the only people that vote for jack to be chief is his choir. Jack is very authorities and commanding Choir! Stand still! (p16) which makes him a good leader. If it werent for jack on the island they would have nothing to eat because jack is the person who organizes the hunt and after many attempts sticks a pig getting meat for the boys. There are very alarming signs right from the start of this novel Golding starts the island as a paradise but even in the first chapter things deteriorate and take a turn for the worse for instants the group of boys bully piggy by calling him just calling him piggy when Ralph told them that his name was piggy even after he had said he wouldnt tell the others. At first there is order almost like a school where you have to have the conch to be able to speak but this never worked as people always interrupted the speaker. Another threat to the order they have is the ever running conflict between Ralph and jack for leadership of the colony of boys which splits up half way through the book starting a war between the boys.

Organized religion is a subject that has been around for years and also is very controversial and can cause some problems with people that want to talk about other religions since people take offence to what they believe. In society there are very good effects of religion and there also is are negative effects but that goes with anything because you have the people that wont to do and be free with no worries of persecution. I would say who cares who is right and wrong look how much better life would be if we lived by a good religion that teaches love forgiveness tolerance which are all good tools for combating social issues.. Religious groups can be invaluable to all levels of society because churches are willing to offer financial support, counseling and to help people in need. A great example of this is the ministry of Franklin Graham. His â€Å"Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe† (Graham, Franklin, N. D). Unfortunately Religion has also played a major part in some of the most devastating events in world history. It has caused hatred, segregation, confrontations and friction where divided groups feel superior and want to wipe out entire nations. Throughout our history there have been many events in which individuals or groups have been persecuted for their choice of faith. One such event was the systematic mass murder of European Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Jehovah’s witness’ and many others by the German Nazi Party during World War II known as â€Å"The Holocaust†. The Germans felt superior and that Jews along with other groups were inferior. They sought to eradicate any impurities or what they thought were wrong. The main premeditated focus of the holocaust was to wipe out the Jews. Attitude Towards Women Essay

One of the most prominent themes in the Canterbury Tales is the attitudes of the pilgrims towards women. There are two distinct sides in the dispute: that women are simply objects of lust that must never be trusted, and that women are highly respectable and loving. The Shipman’s Tale starts off this debate with his depiction of women, which was less than favorable. The woman who is depicted in this tale is the wife of a merchant. She is not treated well by her husband, but certainly is not trustworthy or honorable herself. She sells her body to the best friend of her husband for a measly 100 francs. Her faithfulness to her husband was worth only a few extravagant garments for her to wear. It is her greed for these material goods that drives her into cuckolding her unsuspecting husband. Her worldly desires are more important than her marriage, and in the end she is hardly punished at all. She does manage to keep her husband from finding out, by saying that the Monk was simply repaying his debt and she used the money to buy some clothes. So, she gets away with a crime that would have dealt her a far greater punishment. This outcome, while it certainly wasn’t perfect for the wife, was much less than she deserved (Rossignol). The Prioress steps in with the next tale, and takes a much different view. The Prioress herself is a very humble and well-mannered woman, as she is described in the General Prologue. She is also extremely compassionate towards all of God’s creatures. Her tale is a tribute to the greatest woman of all, the Virgin Mary. While it is a tribute to the Virgin, the focus of the story is more on the little boy and his widowed mother. The mother is greatly distressed at her son’s disappearance, and is eventually led by Jesus himself to the place where her son has been tossed. The idea that Jesus himself was consorting with this woman and answering her prayers makes a strong statement. Jesus certainly would not aid an evil person, so this widow must have been virtuous and humble (Rossignol). And upon her finding of the little boy, the miracle of the Virgin Mary is presented. The boy, who had praised her and loved her throughout his short life, now sang because of the grain placed on his tongue by Mary herself. The story praises a woman who is unmatched in virtue by any mortal man, and shows a widowed mother to be humble and virtuous herself. Certainly a different view than was displayed in the Shipman’s Tale. The tales of Chaucer himself followed the Prioress’ Tale. The first of which, the Tale of Sir Thopas, didn’t take as strong stance on any attitude towards women as did the two tales that preceded it. It did, however, portray women to be objects of lust and affection which could put a man in grave danger. This is what the reader might expect from Chaucer, since he does place himself among some of the other rascals of the group in the General Prologue. The other rascals (the Reeve and Miller especially) had already told stories that depicted women as objects of male desire. Sir Thopas, the knight, left his hometown of Flanders because he had become bored with the local maidens. On his adventure, he dreamt of a beautiful Elf Queen, with whom he fell desperately in lo ve (Ruud). He searched the forest in search of her, and vowed to never stop until her found her. When he met the three-headed giant who stood in his way, he went back home to prepare to fight. He was ready to risk his life to gain the love of the Elf Queen. The Elf Queen in this story is an object of lust and desire, much like the merchant’s wife in the Shipman’s Tale. Since the story is cut short, though, the reader never gets a chance to see what this Queen is really like. All that is seen is that she has captured the heart of this young and noble knight, which has him risking his life in search of her. After Chaucer’s first sorry tale is cut short, he moves on to the Tale of Melibee. In this story some different attitudes towards woman are actually discussed verbally amongst the characters. Melibee talks of how all women are evil and none are good. But, his wife Prudence responds to that by saying that Jesus would never have been born to an evil woman, nor would he have appeared to a woman after his resurrection. So, not all women could be evil. This point is accepted by Melibee, as her point has been clearly made. Also, she points out women who have saved the lives of their husbands and who were truthful to them. As this argument continues, Prudence continues to sway Melibee to accept her argument. She does this with good intentions as well. She does not want her husband to go to war with these enemies of his which certainly could put them all in danger. By the end of the story, she has convinced him so thoroughly that he ignores the advice of his counsel, and follows her advice almost to the letter (Ruud). He does, however, give his enemies a bit of a verbal chiding against her wishes. It is quite possible that he did this simply to maintain himself as the sovereign lord of his estate, and to show Prudence that she has not gained complete mastery over him. This story takes an opposite approach towards women than Chaucer did in the Tale of Sir Thopas. But, since Chaucer does portray himself in the tales as a dunce, it is possible that this character is simply to doltish to make up his mind and take a solid stance on the issue. The Nun’s Priest has the final say in the matter. The Priest is traveling with the Prioress, so before reading this tale one might think that he will be afraid to offend her. This story deals extensively on this issue, and has to main points which reveal the Priest’s attitude towards women. Chauntecleer quotes a Latin phrase that he says means that women are the bliss of men. However, the phrase actually said that women are men’s ruin. So why did Chauntecleer lie to Pertelote when he told her this false translation? Well, quite possibly because he didn’t want to upset her any further, and because he was about to spend the whole morning having sex with her. If he had upset her further, she may have turned him away. Chauntecleer also began to compliment her looks along with changing the meaning of the Latin phrase because he loved her and he wanted to make love to her. So, this is in fact showing that women are the bliss of men, since Chauntecleer is going out of his way to please Pertelote (Scala). By afternoon of the same day, the story takes quite a turn. Pertelote had criticized Chauntecleer for being so cowardly after his dream, and he flew down from his safe perch because of her insults. Because of this, his vision soon came true, and he was captured by the fox. If it had not been for Pertelote berating him because of his cowardice, he would have stayed in his perch in safety. Now, the true meaning of the Latin phrase is also shown as true, as Pertelote has caused the ruin of the great Chauntecleer. There is one substantial difference in this story, however. When Chauntecleer is taken away by the fox, Pertelote shrieks and is quite distressed, as the story emphasizes. She expresses genuine concern for Chauntecleer, unlike the wife in the Shipman’s Tale and Dalilah in the Monk’s Tale. So, the Nun’s Priest’s point on the matter is quite simple. Women are the bliss of men, but, whether intentionally or not, also bring about the ruin of the men they love. Any antitrust law developed within a state of a nation must always focus on safeguarding public welfare. Safeguarding public welfare is attainable through maki ng sure that consumer demands, specifications, needs, and expectations are adequately and timely met through manufacture, production, and sale of goods at reasonable prices. This is true in the case of NCAA v. Board of Regents, 468 U.S. 85 (1984). Nonetheless, despite the fact that antitrust laws aim at reducing levels of monopoly in a bid to enhancing competition, monopoly in itself is not considered unlawful. However, Hylton (61) confirms that if a firm having monopoly powers uses its status to engage in anti-competitive actions thereby infringing on the welfare of the public then such actions amount to violation of antitrust laws. For a claimant to prove that a monopoly organization misused its powers to violate provisions of antitrust laws there is need to identified that the firm in question is a monopoly, that the firm acquired or preserved its monopolistic power through exclusionary of anti-competitive actions, and that claimant’s welfare has been adversely affected du e to suffering proximate losses that are a direct consequences of such exclusionary or anti-competitive actions by the monopolistic firm (Hylton 67). In this scenario, there is no doubt that Consumers Power Company (CPC) is a monopolistic firm that produces and distributes power to retail customers in Ohio, Kentucky. By the virtue of being a monopolistic firm, CPC has not violated the provisions of antitrust laws. Unfortunately, CPC is using its status as a monopoly to charge higher rates to the consumers. The idea of using the monopolistic position or power to charge higher rates is a violation of antitrust laws. One of the aspects of antitrust laws is that an individual or firm should not employ anti-competitive actions or exclusionary actions to interfere with the welfare of the public. Power is such an important resource or need for consumers. Therefore, by charging higher rates, consumers may end up not meeting their needs and demands.
